Curiosity-driven innovation: How ZS Discovery is unlocking scientific insights with AI

At ZS, we’re helping clients lead the charge in healthcare innovation, reshaping how diseases are understood and how treatments are discovered. Through ZS Discovery, we empower clients to uncover complex disease biology, accelerate drug discovery and pioneer new therapeutics. Led by dedicated ZSers like Rasmus Groth, lead scientific software developer in Copenhagen, our work drives breakthrough science that boosts R&D success and leads to better patient outcomes. By blending deep expertise, advanced analytics and a shared passion for innovation, we’re shaping the future of healthcare—one discovery at a time.

Where passion changes lives

ZS believes varied experiences and backgrounds fuel innovation. When teams bring different perspectives to the table, they uncover creative solutions to complex challenges. Rasmus is no exception. His background in architecture, tech startups and programming has given him a unique mix of analytical thinking, design sensibility and technical skill. It’s this kind of assorted thought that strengthens our collaborative culture and allows us to deliver real impact.

Crafting with curiosity

For Rasmus, working on ZS Discovery is an exercise in craftsmanship—transforming complex data into meaningful insights. “I’m fascinated by how curiosity drives innovation,” Rasmus says. “The pencil—once a revolutionary productivity tool—came from a simple need, paired with the right technology. That’s what entrepreneurship is about—finding new ways to solve real-world problems.”

Today, Rasmus is exploring how large language models (LLMs) and knowledge graphs could transform scientific research. He’s building a tool that scans massive volumes of scientific literature to detect patterns and extract insights that might otherwise go unnoticed—insights that could accelerate the discovery of new treatments.

“LLMs have fundamentally changed the pace of drug discovery,” Rasmus explains. “What once took weeks or months to analyze can now be done in moments, helping us go from data to discovery faster.”

Driving smarter drug development

One area where this approach has immediate potential is indication expansion—identifying new therapeutic uses for existing drugs. This not only speeds up access to treatment but also reduces the cost and complexity of development. Rasmus’s LLM-powered tool supports this work by analyzing published research and surfacing patterns that might signal new use cases.

“It’s impossible for a scientist to give equal attention to the 100th article they read as they did the first,” Rasmus says. “By automating the review process, we free scientists to focus on deeper analysis and better decisions—and that speeds up innovation.”

Fueling scientific progress

At ZS, curiosity powers everything we do. Whether it’s uncovering therapeutic possibilities, using LLMs to interpret scientific data or accelerating the path to discovery, we’re always exploring new frontiers in science and innovation. For those who love turning complex data into impactful insights, ZS offers a place where ideas flourish and curiosity leads to real-world change.
