ZS Cares Day: How ZS volunteers made a difference in 2023

ZSers are committed to making their communities healthier places to live. By partnering with clients and nonprofit organizations, ZSers around the world find meaningful ways to deliver healthy, fair and sustainable outcomes for all. This includes giving back through ZS Cares, a global program where ZSers use their knowledge, skills and passions as a force for good to support the communities where they live and work.

In 2023 alone, ZSers partnered with community organizations and invested more than $1 million to bolster inclusion and belonging (I&B) efforts in the United States. In India, we partnered with education and healthcare organizations on initiatives that benefited 5,000 children and 16,000 others, and we planted 9,000 saplings across the country as part of our climate action work.

This is just a glimpse of the many ways ZSers give back. Outside of our ongoing initiatives, we proudly organize our annual global day of volunteerism—ZS Cares Day. In 2023, 1,650 ZSers across 31 offices volunteered more than 7,000 hours in their communities. Here are a few highlights from our fifth annual ZS Cares Day.

Where passion changes lives

In India, ZSers volunteered with the Seva Arogya Foundation and Jeevanstambh Foundation, two organizations improving access to quality healthcare for underserved communities. Volunteers supported health check-up camps and helped medical professionals organize services in areas where care is limited. In New Delhi, ZS donated a YOLO health ATM to Jeevanstambh Foundation. This machine performs more than 65 health tests and shares results instantly—reducing wait times and improving access to primary care.

In Jamaica, ZSers volunteered at Bellevue Hospital, a local mental health facility, where they planted 75 bougainvillea plants and several fruit trees to extend the hospital’s garden. They also donated irrigation lines to support long-term maintenance, helping create a healing space that promotes wellness.

In Chicago, ZSers partnered with Cradles to Crayons, a nonprofit that provides essential resources to homeless and low-income children. Volunteers sorted donations and helped more than 1,000 children receive warm coats and winter clothing. The event even drew a surprise visit from CBS News.

In São Paulo, ZSers teamed up with Make-A-Wish Brazil to grant a young child’s dream. The team helped a six-year-old battling neuroblastoma receive his wish—a Nintendo Switch. “We had a ton of fun and felt so grateful for the chance to make a difference in this young hero’s life,” says Diana Ferreira, front desk administrative assistant.

In San Diego, ZSers volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House at Rady Children’s Hospital, which provides housing, food and support to families traveling for medical treatment. Volunteers prepared and served lunch, sorted toys for patients and siblings, and led crafts in the community area.

In Singapore, ZSers partnered with Passion Wave to kayak and clean up local reservoirs. The team collected litter and learned about the environmental impact of pollutants—reinforcing ZS’s commitment to sustainable practices and public health.

In Bengaluru, 30 ZSers collaborated with the Seva Sahayog Foundation to assemble 300 school kits for students in rural schools. Each kit included books, stationery and a backpack donated by ZSers.

In London, ZSers volunteered with Oasis Children’s Venture, an organization offering inclusive outdoor play and learning for children of all abilities. The team spent the day painting, building and enhancing community playgrounds.

In Boston, ZSers partnered with Community Servings, helping prepare meals for individuals living with severe illnesses, such as HIV, cancer, diabetes and kidney disease. ZSers helped cook, prep and pack hundreds of meals—actively improving the day-to-day lives of patients while continuing to innovate treatment options with clients.

These stories represent just a small selection of the many ways ZSers give back around the world.
